Fall is truly the most enjoyable season to get dressed in; a time when you can run through the entire gamut that is your wardrobe in the matter of a week—from a T-shirt to a turtleneck to a jacket. But while we celebrate the arrival of light outerwear season, the true heroes of fall style are what goes under the jackets: sweaters.

Sweaters are versatile: They can be worn as the outermost garment, or as a mid-layer; they can spruce up an outfit or make it cozy enough to be fit for a lazy Sunday watching football; they add a touch of elegance, while also serving a utilitarian purpose. Not to be dramatic, but sweaters, writ large, may very well be the perfect garment. And, as such, there’s no excuse to not have a healthy rotation of sweaters in your wardrobe.
