Gap
Gap was founded in 1969 by Don and Doris Fisher in San Francisco, California. The initial company mission was to bring quality jeans to the masses, and they did so by selling only Levi’s jeans. The strategy proved successful as the company grew from one to 25 stores in just three years. In 1974, Gap introduced its first line of products, transforming the company from a retailer to a brand. Over the course of the 1980s and particularly the 1990s, Gap would become the standard for American fashion; the default, the go-to for wardrobe staples. Gap offered Americans basics like sweatshirts, shirts and jackets of decent quality at an affordable price. In recent years, Gap has attracted many fashion minded consumers with its ongoing collaboration with GQ, in which GQ would select what it deemed the “best new menswear designers” in America and pair them with Gap to make capsule collections.
