Disney × Number (N)ine

Influential Japanese label Number (N)ine portrays iconic Disney character Mickey Mouse as a rockstar in the legendary Number Nine Mickey Mouse series. Founded in 1996 by designer Takahiro Miyashita, Number Nine rose to fame with its uniquely nuanced take on heritage Americana design. Music has always been Number Nine’s greatest influence. The label’s name derives from the “Revolution 9” track by The Beatles. Number Nine Mickey collab tops and accessories depicting Walt Disney’s beloved character rocking out made waves when it first debuted in Number Nine’s Spring Summer “Extra Heavy” 2000 show. Number 9 Mickey Mouse tees playfully subvert the historic illustrated character’s persona with heavily stylized poses inspired by Pearl Jam leader Eddie Vedder’s world famous stage persona. Later releases include a heavy metal Number 9 Mickey and Medicom made crooner Number 9 Mickey collectible figurines. While high fashion takes on graphic tees are commonplace now, that wasn’t necessarily the case when the Number 9 Mickey shirt was first released. Japanese brands such as Number Nine and equally influential Undercover can be thanked for reconceptualizing the quintessential band tee into a true luxury fashion objet d’art.
