This JUNYA WATANABE COMME des GARÇONS black pleated wrap skirt is from the 1998 Autumn/Winter season. The piece carries the structural quality, experimental approach, and unfinished sensibility often seen in the early Comme des Garçons lineage.

The skirt is made from a black polyester and wool blend fabric, with a slightly firm hand and a subtle matte sheen. Rather than being a light, soft pleated skirt, it has enough structure to hold clear pleat lines and create a strong sense of volume. The wide pleats fall from the waist, producing deep vertical shadows. When still, the silhouette appears clean and orderly; in movement, the pleats open and shift subtly, giving the black fabric a richer sense of depth and light variation.

The design features a wrap construction, with an adjustable side strap and metal hardware at the waist. Unlike a standard skirt with a fixed waist, this piece functions more like an adjustable wrap skirt. When worn, the overlapping front and back panels naturally create asymmetry and shifting volume, allowing the skirt to appear different from various angles.

The upper edge of the waist is finished with a cut-off detail, leaving a naturally frayed texture along the fabric edge. This raw finish contrasts with the precise pleating below, adding a slightly punk and deconstructed feel.
