Junya Watanabe

Junya Watanabe is a Japanese fashion designer born in 1961 in Fukushima. He is best known as the creative director of his eponymous label, which has been part of the Comme des Garçons group since its inception in 1992. Watanabe joined CDG in the late 1980s as a patternmaker and quickly rose to become a design director before launching his own label under the CDG umbrella. His initial focus was on womenswear, applying a more utilitarian approach to designs inspired by his hero, Issey Miyake. After the launch of Junya Watanabe MAN in 2001, Watanabe has brought his ethos of reimagining classics to the men's front, collaborating with brands like New Balance, Levi's, Carhartt and Palace over the years. Watanabe often uses classic garments and reimagines them through a mix of art, pattern, patchwork and deconstruction, making him one of the top designers in te world.
