Seller Description
Bought 3 pairs of these from a respected Japanese source, the nos 1, 2, and 3
For those living under a rock, these are the ne plus ultra of mens pants. I can't say it better than this critic, so let me quote him:
Kapital’s Century Denim Monkey Cisco jeans are unique because they combine proprietary Japanese weaving techniques, traditional hand-stitched aesthetics, and unconventional natural dyes built to last for a century.
1. Proprietary Single-Pass Sashiko Weaving
• Trade-secret process: The fabric is woven in a single pass on a specialized, single loom—a method kept tightly secret by Kapital.
• Integrated Sashiko: Instead of stitching sashiko ("little stabs") onto finished fabric as a decorative afterthought, Kapital weaves the reinforcement threads directly into the structure of the denim itself.
• Stiff, dense hand-feel: Because the topstitching is built straight into the fabric, the material starts out stiffer and heavier than standard denim of a similar weight, requiring a distinct break-in period.
2. Traditional and Experimental Natural Dyes
• Kakishibu (Persimmon Tannin): Variants like the No. 5S use fermented persimmon juice, which imparts a warm terracotta/orange-brown hue. Unlike indigo, persimmon tannin actually darkens and deepens with exposure to sunlight and air over time.
• Waist: Runs tight. Most buyers and boutique staff (like Standard & Strange and Kapital stores) recommend sizing up 1 to 2 sizes from your standard Western or Japanese waist size.
• The "No. 1.2.3" Meaning: The numbers 1, 2, and 3 stand for the three types of indigo (American, Japanese, and Natural) combined into the warp, weft, and sashiko stitching.
• Shrinkage: The 100% cotton unwashed/sanforized fabric can shrink further with cold or warm soaks (losing about 1 inch or more in the waist and length), so factoring in room for shrinkage is critical.
• Leg/Cut (e.g., Monkey Cisco): Features a higher rise, a fuller seat and thighs, and a slight taper below the knee that comfortably fits over boots
Price: $736 on Standard and Strange, if you can get them. Size 40 is extremely rare
Production: Made in Japan
• Sumi Ink or Triple Indigo: Other iterations (like the No. 7S or No. 1.2.3-S) use rich Sumi ink or multi-layered rope-dyed indigo combinations (American, Japanese, and natural indigo) that bleed and fade dramatically against the base fabric.
• Functional aging: The surface-coating nature of dyes like kakishibu provides slight natural water resistance and unique high-contrast patina patterns that evolve heavily with daily wear.
3. The Monkey Cisco Fit
• Updated silhouette: The "Monkey" fit is an evolution of Kapital’s classic Cisco cut.
• Proportions: It features a higher rise, a roomier seat and thighs, a classic five-pocket layout with a back cinch/buckle, and a gentle taper below the knee that is designed to sit comfortably over boots.
Are you sold yet?
I cannot keep all three - they will not be used the way they should be so I am selling the no. 3 (now, if you should really, really want nos 1 or 2, we MAY be able to come to some arrangement)
