Versace

Gianni Versace grew up working for his mother, who owned a local sewing business. It was here where Versace would fall in love with fashion. In 1973 he moved to Milan to work as the designer of Byblos. In 1978, Versace opened his eponymous boutique. Over the next decade, Versace became very popular worldwide thanks to the innovative move of taking his runway shows out of Milan to Paris and New York. After his untimely and highly publicized death in 1997, his sister, Donatella Versace, took over the creative direction for the brand. Versace was known for dressing celebrities, a media savvy move to keep all eyes on the label’s designs. An especially iconic celebrity style moment for Versace includes Jennifer Lopez’s iconic green silk dress, worn to the 42nd Grammy Awards. The brand has always been a symbol of Italian luxury, but has come in and out of popularity over the years. In 2018, the brand was sold to Michael Kors’ Capri Holdings. Since then the brand has kept its name on the minds of its consumers thanks to blockbuster runway shows, celebrity co-signs and heavily branded collaborations with brands like Kith.
