Sterling Ruby Men's Hi-Top Sneakers
Born in 1972, Sterling Ruby is an American artist known for his frequent collaborations with Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons. While attending the graduate art program at contemporary art mecca Art Center College of Design, Ruby brushed shoulders with blue-chip artist Mike Kelley, who is known in the fashion realm for his frequent collaborations with Supreme. For decades, Sterling Ruby’s collages and bleached textiles have become a fixture within Raf Simons design history. Ruby, then an emerging artist increasingly known for his collage-inspired work across mediums, was first approached by Simons to design the Raf Simons Tokyo store which opened in 2008. While creating the store together, the two partnered on exclusive store fixtures made out of custom bleached denim textile. This now legendary bleach process can be seen in highly coveted Raf Simons x Sterling Ruby denim, sweatshirt and t-shirt archival pieces. The Raf Simons x Sterling Ruby boots from the Raf Simons A/W 2014 collection are highly sought after by collectors. During the designer’s short-lived stint at Calvin Klein, Ruby was naturally brought on as a collaborator. Ruby and Simons’ creatively fruitful partnership can be likened to other highly influential fashion-artist pairings such as Tom Sachs x Nike and Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama.
