After giving up his lifelong dream of being a radio DJ after it proved to be a financially unfeasible career, Zanotti decided design was the next best path for him. After deciding footwear would be his focus, he worked at a local San Mauro Pascoli shoe company for four years. After leaving the local company, he became a freelance designer and did work for brands such as Gianfranco Ferré and Valentino. Finally, in 1994, Zanotti started his eponymous brand and released his first collection in 1995.

Over 25 years later, Zanotti remains among the most popular luxury footwear brands in the world, with his sneakers being a hit among men especially.
