Kihachiro Onitsuka founded his eponymous footwear brand, Onitsuka Company Limited, in 1949 in Japan. Onitsuka’s goal was to create footwear for Japanese youth to help them live a healthy lifestyle. After some hiccups in the early years, the ball truly started to roll for Onitsuka in the mid-’50s. By the late-’60s, the company was in a position to have its products featured in the 1968 Olympics, boosting the brand's profile tremendously. By 1977, Onitsuka had grown big enough to merge with two other companies, then becoming Asics. Since then, Asics has become a go-to brand amongst runners in Japan and beyond. In the late-’80s and ’90s, sneakers like Gel-Lyte III became a hit in the casual market, helping Asics grow beyond running. In the 2000s, Asics has benefited greatly from collaborations with Ronnie Fieg and Kiko Kostadinov.
