Background:
"STS-107 was the 113th flight of the Space Shuttle program and the 28th and final flight of Columbia, launching from Kennedy Space Center on January 16, 2003. The crew Commander Rick Husband, Pilot William McCool, Payload Commander Michael Anderson, and Mission Specialists Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark, and payload specialist Ilan Ramon worked around the clock in two shifts performing roughly 80 experiments in life sciences, materials science, and fluid physics. During launch, a piece of insulating foam broke loose from the external tank and struck the leading edge of the left wing, damaging protective tiles. Mission management assessed the strike as non-threatening, and the mission continued without incident. On February 1, 2003, as Columbia re-entered the atmosphere, hot gases penetrated the damaged tile section, melting structural elements of the wing, and the orbiter broke apart over Texas at approximately 9:00 a.m. EST just 16 minutes before its scheduled landing killing all seven crew members."
