Vintage 90's Dexter Wong Crashing Waves Sheer Organza-Style Clubwear Shirt
Description
A spectacular, archival grade piece from cult British designer Dexter Wong. This sheer shirt features a striking, all-over photorealistic graphic print of ocean waves crashing onto rocks, surrounded by images of shimmering sunlit water. It is a quintessential example of the boundary-pushing, hyper-visual club wear that defined London’s elite fashion subcultures during this era.
Design & Construction Details
The Fabric: Crafted from a lightweight, ultra-light sheer material that mimics the elegant, crisp translucency of a premium organza or fine technical voile. It offers an exquisite transparency whilst retaining incredibly vibrant print detail. Please note the composition label has worn away over time.
The Silhouette
Features a beautifully tailored, lean 1990s silhouette with a classic pointed collar, full-button front placket, and structured cuffs.
The Print
A highly detailed, dramatic marine print capturing the motion of churning white sea foam against deep ocean blues.
About the Designer & Provenance
Central Saint Martins graduate Dexter Wong was one of the most influential figures in the 1990s London fashion landscape. His sharp, futuristic, and highly creative designs were created specifically for people who wanted to make a statement, catching the eye of international style icons from David Bowie to Michael Jackson.
This shirt was purchased new by myself, directly from his Covent Garden shop, which I think was just off Seven Dials; I would pop in quite often as I worked locally, and I met him there a few times. Possibly as early as 1994, but no later than 1996. True archive pieces from Dexter Wong’s independent heyday are incredibly difficult to find, particularly in high-impact graphic prints like this.
Condition & Measurements
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The print remains crisp, vibrant and unchanged, whilst the delicate fabric has been exceptionally well preserved with no notable pulls or tears. I have checked it very closely, and considering the age the fabric, is in incredible condition, I can find nothing of note, however, as it's organza like, you may find the odd flaw that I've missed. This is mid 90's 'perfect', not new perfect ;-).
Styling
As it's transparent, I used to wear it either over a white tshirt in the day or a black tshirt for night, with either dinner suit trousers and jacket, or leather trousers as here. Of course if you're beach body ready, it would be fabulous on its own!
