Cyberdog London 'Countdown' LED T-Shirt 1997/98
The Story
Perhaps run-of-the-mill today, but in the late 90's this was quite a shock for people to see on the street, and only for a wearer prepared to get a lot of attention, so it was perfect for me! I bought this shirt new from their Seven Dials store in Covent Garden, now closed I believe, sometime around 1997, possibly 96, but no later than 98, as I remember wearing it to party that year. I then wore it one last time to a Millennium Eve party in New York. I was filmed by a local TV news crew, and asked, "What happens when it get's to zero?" Without a moments thought "I explode" replied I! Sadly I've never been able to find the footage, but it could be out there somewhere.
The T-Shirt
An exceptional example of early Cyberdog engineering, this archival "Museum Grade" piece features a fully functioning LED digital display. The T itself features an intricate circuit board print that perfectly captures the Y2K cyber-rave aesthetic. Depending upon the light and angle, the circuit board can go from a subtle grey to a vivid, shining silver.
The Display
The 2 blue panels are firmly attached to the centre of the T with Velcro, and will not otherwise move. The bottom of the panels then pass through the T and connect to 2 flat cables, which run down inside the shirt to the small 'Light Attack' controller which is stored in a little pocket just above the internal hem. There are 2 buttons, On/ Off and the selector, which you click to cycle through - Countdown Normal Speed (standard time) - Countdown Faster - Count Up Normal - Count Up Faster - Pause/ Flash. These controllers were known to fail at the time, I think mine was an improved version, and with a combination of this, care and luck, it's made it to nearly 30 years old and still works perfectly. Operates with 4 AAA batteries.
Condition
Incredible 'as-new' condition, it appears completely unworn. The display can be seen counting down in the images and the other options work too, beyond rare for these early LED garments. Could this be the only one left? In daylight, with the display off, you can see a few slight scuffs on the displays plastic, they are so minor, I almost didn't mention it!
Provenance & Value
This is a genuine collector's item from the height of the London underground scene. Given its functional state and archival condition I believe this to be a very fair ask.
90's Rave Clubwear at it's most wacky yet sophisticated - 99, 98, 97, 96, 95, 94...........
