Background:
"The five missions on this shirt represent some of America's most pivotal spaceflight milestones. Mercury 3 (May 5, 1961) saw Alan Shepard become the first American in space, followed by Mercury 6 (February 20, 1962), where John Glenn orbited the Earth three times to become the first American to do so. Gemini 4 (June 3, 1965) featured James McDivitt and Edward White, with White making history as the first American to walk in space. Apollo 11 (July 16, 1969) is perhaps the most iconic of all — Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin journeyed to the Moon, with Armstrong becoming the first human to set foot on the lunar surface. Finally, Space Shuttle 1 (April 12, 1981), the maiden flight of Columbia, saw John Young and Robert Crippen become the first Americans to pilot a recoverable spacecraft, opening the Space Shuttle era. Together, these five missions trace the arc of American spaceflight from its earliest tentative steps to the dawn of reusable space travel."
