Seller Description
A vintage navy set-up suit from postwar to mid-Showa era Japan, tailored in NIKKE TEX ALL WOOL fabric.
Rather than a clear stripe, this cloth carries a subtle surface detail that resembles overlapping fish scales under the light. It gives the suit a quiet but distinctive presence — understated from afar, yet full of texture and character up close. The hand feels smooth and dry like a fine worsted wool, with a balanced structure and drape that makes it easy to wear from autumn through spring.
This piece comes from the family archive of Ikeda Tailor Shop, a tailoring lineage connected to Kobe, Japan. It was preserved through the family of the seller, whose great-grandfather operated a tailor shop, and whose grandfather — a Japanese scientist known for first identifying dextrin, a compound now used in dental care worldwide — wore these garments for many years.
Fabric / Material
The trouser hem allowance shows selvedge fabric marked “NIKKE TEX ALL WOOL.”
The ALL WOOL marking indicates pure new wool rather than recycled fiber, reflecting the kind of reliable wool cloth used in Japanese tailoring at the time. The fabric feels like a practical medium-weight serge/twill, with enough body for everyday wear while still keeping a graceful drape.
Mid–late 20th century Japanese tailoring (1960s–1980s), from the family archive of a Kobe-based tailor. Exact year unknown.
Tailored under a lineage connected to a Kobe-based Japanese atelier once supported by the seller’s family — a quiet legacy woven into every seam.
Tailored under a lineage connected to a Kobe-based Japanese atelier — once operated by the seller’s great-grandfather, and worn for decades by her grandfather, a renowned Japanese scientist who first identified dextrin, a compound now used in dental care worldwide.
This piece carries not just tailoring heritage, but the legacy of a family dedicated to invisible excellence — in science, in craftsmanship, and in the quiet dignity of how one chooses to live.
