From the time he was 15, the London artist/skater/designer/model Blondey McCoy has usually been in front of one lens or another. Now 22, he’s appeared in Palace, Adidas, and Burberry campaigns, been picked up by Kate Moss for her modeling agency, walked in Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton debut, and shown up on the cover of Skepta’s last album.
IDEA BOOKS X ALASDAIR MCLELLAN BLONDEY 15 - 21 BOOK - 2019
Sometimes people just are comfortable with themselves,” the British photographer Alasdair McLellan said in an interview. “That’s just a thing some people have and some people don’t.” McCoy and McLellan struck up a working relationship when McLellan’s assistant, a skater and photographer, introduced the two. For his new book Blondey 15-21, McLellan collected 150 photographs of McCoy he took over those years.
“I was really shy,” McCoy said in a separate interview about his first meeting with McLellan. “We didn’t talk that much. It wasn’t until I came out of my shell more that I really got to know him.”
McLellan remembered it differently. After he’d met with McCoy’s mother to get her blessing to shoot him, he found that McCoy “was great. He’d never been photographed in a fashion context, [although] obviously he’d been photographed for skate magazines. He was brilliant. He wasn’t afraid at all. He just kind of went for it.”
Soon, they struck up a friendship too. “Going from the working relationship to becoming actual friends was probably just sort of a mutual love of the Smiths and Morrissey,” McCoy said. “I don’t know how many times we’ve had the same sort of conversation about the same things.” And last year, after their projects with Palace and Burberry started to add up, McLellan thought he’d see what the arc of his work with McCoy looked like in sum. Before putting the book together, he said, “I never really thought that he changed that much.” From the time they met, McLellan had always been grabbed by McCoy’s poise. “And then you look at [the book] and you think, My God, he really did change that much.”
