A rare opportunity for Ren Han fans to own one of his limited monographs!
Chinese photographer and poet Ren Hang, notorious for his provocative portraits in art and fashion circles, died in Beijing on February 24, 2017. He was 29 years old.
Ren Hang was born in Jilin, China, in 1987. He was brought on the international stage after starting snapshots of friends and classmates as a teenager. He often photographed his models naked, although his study of female and male forms was less a sexual objectification than an aesthetic definition of youth, freedom, or romantic and Platonic love. In his body compositions between forest, jungle and mountains, he wanted nothing more than to capture the moment himself, without being tied to political or sexual gestures. The process of creating these moments is spontaneous and time and subject specific. His models trust him not only as an artist or reserved figure behind the camera, but also as a close friend or even lover.
At the beginning of his career, the artist was censored in China for the nudity in his work. This did not hinder his urge to create and year after year he produced dozens of catalogs, books and photo works. In 2015, his photo works were selected for the groundbreaking exhibition "Medium of Desire: An International Anthology for Photography and Video" at the Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York. The following year, he was awarded the Outset 2016 Unseen Exhibition Fund in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, which included a solo exhibition at the city's Foam Photography Museum in 2017. He was also a celebrated photographer in the fashion world, working with the musician and singer Frank Ocean, Numéro magazine and elegant fashion labels, opening ceremony and Maison Kitsuné.
Ren Hang's former studio assistant confirmed the cause of death as suicide. The artist never shy away from the subject of mental illness and published a number of meditative blog posts on his personal website under the title "My Depression". In a short entry, he writes: "I'm worried to hear and hear. People who care about me said," You look so happy, how can you be depressed? "
Ren Hang was in a flood of projects at the time of his death. In addition to preparing for a collaboration with the French art and culture magazine Purple, he had just opened a large solo exhibition entitled "Human Love" (2 / 17–4 / 2) at Stockholm's Fotografiska, a center for contemporary photography. In memory of the artist, Fotografiska added a portrait of the artist and a white rose. A book by Taschen published in February 2017 illustrates his still short career in breathtaking multicolor.
