This is a rare, archival piece from the most sought-after era of Giorgio Armani’s career. Produced under the Borgonuovo 21 label, named after the brand's historic headquarters at 21 Via Borgonuovo, Milan, this represents the absolute pinnacle of Armani’s mainline "Black Label" production.
In the 1990s, Armani revolutionised tailoring by "deconstructing" the suit. As famously documented in Martin Scorsese’s Made in Milan (1990), Armani literally ripped the padding and stiff canvas out of traditional jackets to create a silhouette that was fluid, comfortable, and "soft". This blazer is a direct result of that design philosophy, offering a garment that feels more like a luxurious cardigan than a rigid formal jacket.
Velvet Accents: The horizontal welt pockets are trimmed with deep black velvet, a signature Armani high-end touch that elevates the piece from standard to versatile garment suitable for both elevated daytime and formal evening wear.
Asymmetrical Buttoning: The unique four-button closure creates a sophisticated, overlapping front. This design choice was a hallmark of 90s Armani, intended to break the visual "boxiness" of traditional tailoring and create a more dynamic, moving silhouette.
The fabric is a premium 100% Virgin Wool in a classic herringbone (broken twill) weave. This "Salt and Pepper" pattern is achieved by interlacing black and light grey yarns, providing immense textural depth and a "heathered" grey appearance from a distance. Armani chose these specific weaves for their ability to hold a soft shape without creasing, ensuring the blazer drapes perfectly even without internal structure.
The "Armani Cut": Features slightly dropped, soft shoulders with minimal padding to follow the natural lines of the body. It offers a relaxed, fluid "90s fit" that is not restrictive. It is designed to be worn effortlessly, capturing the "Quiet Luxury" aesthetic long before the term existed.
Collector's Note
Borgonuovo 21 pieces are increasingly rare on the secondary market. They were personally overseen by Giorgio Armani and are distinguished by a level of hand-finishing and fabric quality that far exceeds the brand's later diffusion lines.
