Effortless Cool ROGUE Leather Accent Vest, Badass Details – Tom Ford, John Varvatos, Allsaints Aesthetic
When I was traveling in Italy, you’d see stylish guys everywhere rocking these vests either solo or layered under all kinds of jackets. Style icons like Ryan Reynolds, Justin Theroux, and Johnny Depp also regularly work these into their outfits. It’s a can’t miss look women love (see photo reference). Rogue made this badass version with leather accents and subtle details throughout to give it more of a rock star vibe.
When I was first getting into clothes/fashion, I came across ROGUE when I’d seen a number of celebrities wearing them. I tracked them down at Neiman Marcus and Fred Segal in LA. They always had sartorial elements transformed into their own urban badass rock star style.
ROGUE had very similar DNA and price points to VARVATOS. In fact, a couple of the Varvatos people helped found ROGUE. I got to know all of them producing some of their early campaigns (see reference). What I especially love is the authenticity. Jimmy the designer built and raced muscle cars, rode motorcycles like Steve McQueen, and looked even more the part of a rock star / badass than the guys who modeled his clothes. He and everyone there were incredibly nice, cool people and last I heard he’d taken over for Karl Lagerfeld.
Everything I have from ROGUE fits bespoke off the rack; maybe better than any brand I’ve found. The tailoring is something they excelled at (I came to learn that’s what many of their little darts and accents were about; beyond looking cool it takes up all those little loose ends for a clean silhouette). The quality is equally impressive; Jimmy designed these to be worn and take a beating. When we were at his home on the water, he was actually out soaking pants on the dock in the saltwater and letting them dry in the sun to bake in cool wrinkles and wear patterns.
NOTE: Not to be confused with the lesser Rogue State line which was their version of Star USA to Varvatos Collection.
ROGUE was carried in many high end stores and had a sizable celebrity following (guys like Mark Wahlberg, Eric Church, Gerard Butler, Kevin Bacon and Matt Bomer to name a few), but it’s a cutthroat industry. They had a great run, but sadly it didn’t pan out. What they left are some great garments like these if you can find them.
I hung onto this all these years and don’t want to sell this, but am tight on space. This piece is long gone and if you’re lucky enough to find one; hence price is firm. Note there’s a small little hole near the waist (see photo) filled in with black so it’s mostly hidden and wouldn’t be noticed.
