Seller Description
A mid-century two-piece suit cut in a deep blue-grey shadow stripe — the kind of cloth that reads almost solid from a distance, with quiet movement when the light hits it. Subtle stripes run through the twill, giving it depth without feeling flashy; in person it sits between charcoal and navy, a very wearable blue-grey.
Tailored in a crisp NIKKE TEX ALL WOOL worsted, this suit has that dry, smooth hand you expect from good Japanese cloth of the era – firm enough to keep a clean line, but with an easy drape once it’s on the body. The trousers carry the original selvedge “NIKKE TEX / ALL WOOL” woven into the seam allowance, a small detail that anchors it firmly in postwar Japanese suiting history.
Mid–late 20th century Japanese tailoring (1960s–1980s), from the family archive of a Kobe-based tailor. Exact year unknown.
NIKKE (Nippon Keori) was one of Japan’s key wool specialists in the postwar period, producing worsted fabrics for both domestic use and export. The NIKKE TEX selvedge here speaks to that moment when Japanese mills were quietly matching global standards in menswear cloth — durable, refined, and meant to last.
Tailored under a lineage connected to a Kobe-based Japanese atelier once supported by the seller’s family — a quiet legacy woven into every seam.
Tailored under a lineage connected to a Kobe-based Japanese atelier — once operated by the seller’s great-grandfather, and worn for decades by her grandfather, a renowned Japanese scientist who first identified dextrin, a compound now used in dental care worldwide.
This piece carries not just tailoring heritage, but the legacy of a family dedicated to invisible excellence — in science, in craftsmanship, and in the quiet dignity of how one chooses to live.
