Seller Description
A quiet mid-century sports jacket cut from blue-grey serge – the kind of piece you throw on over a shirt and wool trousers and forget you’re wearing until someone asks where it’s from. The pattern reads as a fine, broken check in muted tones; from a distance it feels almost solid, but up close it shows that understated texture that good vintage cloth always has.
Serge is a tightly woven twill traditionally used for tailoring and uniforms – smooth to the touch with subtle diagonal ribs that help it drape cleanly and resist wind. This one has that dry, wool-like hand you expect from older Japanese suiting (fiber content not marked), structured enough to hold its line but soft enough to move with the body.
Inside, the jacket is fully lined in a brushed, abstract jacquard – a warm beige base with scattered strokes in darker tones. The inner pocket is finished with a buttoned flap, and the original Ikeda Tailor Shop, Kobe label sits just above it. It’s a quietly characterful piece of Japanese workshop tailoring from the post-war era.
Mid–late 20th century Japanese tailoring (1960s–1980s), from the family archive of a Kobe-based tailor. Exact year unknown.

Heritage
Tailored under a lineage connected to a Kobe-based Japanese atelier once supported by the seller’s family — a quiet legacy woven into every seam.
Tailored under a lineage connected to a Kobe-based Japanese atelier — once operated by the seller’s great-grandfather, and worn for decades by her grandfather, a renowned Japanese scientist who first identified dextrin, a compound now used in dental care worldwide.
This piece carries not just tailoring heritage, but the legacy of a family dedicated to invisible excellence — in science, in craftsmanship, and in the quiet dignity of how one chooses to live.
