This long kimono is crafted by patchworking mid-Showa period tenugui (Japanese hand towels) into a cotton garment. The tenugui used were originally from a shop called “Fujiya,” and feature designs inspired by the shop’s name: Mount Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant.

These three motifs — Ichifuji, Nitaka, Sannasubi — are considered auspicious in Japan and traditionally associated with “good luck in the first dream of the year.” The designs reflect both playful creativity and a wish for fortune in everyday life at the time.

Unlike typical kimonos, this piece features tube sleeves, which are closer in shape to modern Western-style sleeves. The streamlined sleeve design allows for ease of movement, making it practical for daily wear. Its versatile style also allows it to be worn as a kimono in a casual, clothing-like manner.

The colors, patterns, and natural aging of the tenugui create a unique character that only decades of use and time can impart.

Today, such repurposed vintage textiles are highly valued internationally, appreciated not only as collectible garments but also as artistic pieces. This kimono can be worn as a lightweight jacket, displayed on a wall as interior art, or used as material for creative reconstruction.
