In 2014, Rag & Bone of New York invested in building a company-owned men’s footwear division. At the heart of that initiative was the creation of a “Standard Issue” collection — utilitarian shoes and boots designed for year-round wear, climate permitting. These were not licensed or outsourced styles, but fully Rag & Bone–owned designs aimed at delivering enduring value, craftsmanship, and quiet distinction.

Offered now from a private collection is a one-of-one prototype from that inaugural season — a rare find and a true collector's item. The silhouette is a remodeled training shoe originally designed in the 1960s — still manufactured today without compromise to its design, quality, or comfort. Known for its strength and durability, this style has earned a reputation for long-lasting wear and versatile utility.

What makes this pair special:

Upper: Constructed from authentic Harris Tweed — the only fabric protected by its own Act of Parliament. Handmade in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides from 100% pure new wool, Harris Tweed is famed for its water resistance, warmth, durability, and distinctive hairy texture.

Sole: Made using a direct injection process — a one-step construction method that fuses the rubber sole directly to the upper. Unlike traditional vulcanized sneakers, this eliminates the need for glue or cement, reducing the risk of delamination and creating a cleaner aesthetic.

Lining: Lightweight, moisture-absorbent cotton lining ensures breathable, all-day comfort.

Laces: Athletic-inspired cotton laces round out the utilitarian design.

This pair was developed as a fabric trial — the Harris Tweed proved too costly for scaled production despite strong showroom appeal. It was never released to market. Estimated retail would have been $425. Offered now well below that, it is unworn and has been properly stored since 2014.
