David Lynch’s Industrial Symphony No. 1: The Dream of the Brokenhearted
Laura Dern · Nicolas Cage · Angelo Badalamenti · Julee Cruise · Twin Peaks · Blue Velvet · Wild at Heart
Step into the dream.
Offered here is an impossibly rare artifact—an original cast and crew T-shirt from Industrial Symphony No. 1: The Dream of the Brokenhearted, David Lynch’s surreal, operatic fever dream performed live only twice in history. Created exclusively for those who brought the vision to life, this shirt was never sold to the public. It was gifted solely to the small, mythic circle of insiders who helped summon this otherworldly production into existence at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on November 10, 1989.
This isn’t just a shirt—it’s a relic from the innermost sanctum of Lynch’s universe. A portal to a singular moment when Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, and Wild at Heart collided in a cosmic meditation on love, sorrow, and the machinery of the heart.
The front of the shirt reads like a totem—a vertical incantation of cinema, sorrow, and surrealism. At the very top, in luminous green, “David Lynch” crowns the design. The choice of color is not incidental: green, in Lynch’s world, evokes the forest of Twin Peaks, the flickering fluorescence of domestic horror in Blue Velvet, and the otherworldly pallor of spiritual in-betweens. It is the color of mystery, of growth shadowed by decay.
Beneath this, in delicate white text, the phrase “THE DIRECTOR OF” rests like a whispered prelude, a signal to those who know. What follows is a descending ladder of titles—each a rupture in the fabric of American cinema:
TWIN PEAKS — rendered in the same eerie green, the title vibrates with the energy of secrets, duality, and the trembling line between dream and nightmare. It is a series that taught us that nothing in the woods is ever what it seems. That the girl next door might also be the broken angel in the Red Room.
Blue Velvet — inscribed in elegant cursive white, it softens the violence hidden within. This is the suburban grotesque written in lipstick and blood; a film that showed us the insects writhing beneath manicured lawns and polite conversation.
WILD AT HEART — again in sharp green capitals, this title shouts like Sailor Ripley’s snakeskin jacket. A love story shot through with madness, fire, and American myth. A road movie barreling through a dreamscape of Elvis, witches, and flaming wreckage.
Then, in small white text, comes a transition, a breath held: “NOW BRINGS YOU”—an invitation into the unknown.
And finally, the crescendo:
“INDUSTRIAL SYMPHONY NO. 1”
Lynch’s name was the overture—this is the opera. Rendered in ghostly green, this title hangs in space like a neon hallucination. The production itself was a living dream: a heartbroken woman adrift in an industrial wasteland of shadow, sound, and suspended figures. A collision of theater, noise, and spirit. This shirt doesn’t advertise a concert—it archives a ritual.
On the back, the details of the symphony’s soul:
In white block letters, “MUSIC COMPOSED BY ANGELO BADALAMENTI”—the maestro whose melodies haunt Lynch’s worlds like lullabies sung from the void. Beneath this, in soft cursive, “featuring” introduces the voice of the dream:
JULEE CRUISE, whose spectral vocals became the soundtrack to grief, memory, and love as echo.
Finally, the corporate signature: “WARNER REPRISE VIDEO” with a subtle copyright—this too matters. It is the marker that something ephemeral, once performed only twice, was caught on tape, encased, archived—like a dream bottled and buried.
Deeper Meaning & Thematic Resonance
This shirt is not just a collector’s item. It is a vertical text—an invocation of Lynch’s most sacred collaborators, obsessions, and symbols. Together, these works form a constellation of American surrealism:
Twin Peaks: The corruption of innocence. The mystery of identity. The psychic residue of trauma and the veil between worlds.
Blue Velvet: The horror behind the picket fence. Voyeurism, desire, and the rot beneath surface normalcy.
Wild at Heart: Love as rebellion. Chaos as freedom. The mythic and the grotesque colliding on the American highway.
Industrial Symphony No. 1: Grief expressed not through plot but through music, lighting, bodies in suspension. A metaphysical opera of heartbreak and transformation.
Every title on this shirt is a psychic coordinate. Every color and font is a whisper from the unconscious. To wear it is to carry the spirit of Lynch’s universe—to embody the ache, beauty, and unknowable nature of dreams half-remembered.
This is not a promotional tee. It’s a ritual garment.
A sacred artifact from the dream of the brokenhearted.
Directed by Lynch and scored by Angelo Badalamenti, Industrial Symphony No. 1 stars Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage—months before their iconic roles in Wild at Heart—alongside Julee Cruise, whose voice would soon come to define the haunting soul of Twin Peaks. Cruise performs five dreamlike songs, including “Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart” and “The World Spins,” both of which would later echo through the red-curtained spaces of Lynch’s television masterpiece.
The story—of a heartbroken woman drifting through an industrial wasteland after her lover leaves—is told through sound, vision, and surreal theatrical spectacle. Inspired by Lynch’s own series of geometric “industrial symphonies,” the production was unlike anything else before or since. It remains one of his most elusive, emotionally charged, and spiritually resonant works.
Only two live performances were ever held. Only a handful of these shirts were ever made. This is one of them.
Authenticity: Original 1989 vintage. Not a reproduction.
Provenance: Cast and crew exclusive. Never available to the public.
Condition: Gently worn with a beautifully aged patina—rich in character and history.
A singular piece from the deep core of Lynch’s creative universe. For the true collector, the dreamer, the one who knows the world spins.
