Today I’ve got two variations of one of the rarest and most sought-after versions of If Six Was Nine’s SBB (super bell bottom). These pants are loaded with detail: cultural beadwork, gemstones, sashiko repairs, mixed metal and layered fabrics. This is the “DX”, or deluxe, version of the tuxedo, which pairs pinstripe fabric with the details you see on most mud max pairs plus loads of additional elements.

The deluxe models across If Six Was Nine’s catalog carry the most detail and show how passionate about ancient cultural craftsmanship the designer was. In my opinion that makes them some of the best reflections of what the brand is about. The small turquoise glass seed beads are associated with Venetian and Czech glassmaking, though people have stitched beads like these into fabric in plenty of traditions throughout history. The other pocket has a fine knotted cord set with gemstones, done in a jewelry technique called micro-macramé that goes back to 13th-century Arab weavers. The paisley on the second fabric sewn into the pinstripes comes from Persia and India.

Not many people know this, but the tuxedo pants came in two different pinstripe fabrics, and you can see both here. One is darker with the stripes spaced further apart; the other is a washed grey with the stripes much closer together. The left pair, with the darker pinstripes, has already been traded, so the right pair is the one still available. It’s in amazing condition, though it doesn’t have the custom skull rivets the others have. What really sets it apart is the size: a comfortable, easy-to-wear 30 has never come up for sale before, apart from earlier sales of this exact pair.
