Jake 1990s Velvet Yokosuka Sukajan Jacket
Originating from post-World War II Japan, the Sukajan or souvenir jacket was initially commissioned by American servicemen stationed in Yokosuka who had local artisans embroider traditional Japanese motifs onto jacket garments. This piece by the Japanese label Jake revives that mid-century aesthetic with heavyweight velveteen and intricate rayon threading. The jacket features mirrored tiger busts on the chest, serpentine dragons along the sleeves, and a prominent roaring tiger with bamboo stalks and Yokosuka lettering on the back. While original 1950s examples are exceptionally scarce, quality Japanese revival pieces from the late 1990s and early 2000s have gained their own dedicated collector following in streetwear and vintage circles. The balance of plush burgundy velvet, robust dual-stripe ribbing, and dense embroidery ensures high aesthetic appeal and enduring market desirability.
