The Florida Gators represent the University of Florida in Gainesville, participating as a dominant powerhouse within the NCAA's Southeastern Conference (SEC). The school adopted the alligator as its symbol in 1908 after a local merchant created gator-embroidered college pennants, leading to the university's famous costumed mascot duo, Albert and Alberta Gator.
