This knitted silk Balenciaga creased oversized turtleneck from Summer 2022 feels like Demna taking the idea of elegance and deliberately letting it collapse. Cut in fluid ribbed silk with an oversized, crinkled construction, it has the presence of something formal that has been slept in, packed away, pulled back out and somehow become more interesting because of it. The chest is finished with a tonal Atelier Crest, almost like a ghost of old couture hierarchy sitting on a garment that refuses to behave like traditional luxury.

That contradiction fits perfectly into the Summer 22 Red Carpet collection, where Balenciaga turned the fashion show itself into a staged premiere and blurred the roles of celebrity, model, audience and spectacle. The whole exercise was about questioning who is performing for whom, and where fashion ends and entertainment begins.

A couture crest embroidered onto something intentionally creased feels almost sacrilegious. Prestige is still there, but it has stopped standing up straight.
