A fantastically rare 1940s mouton-lined, horsehide jacket from the legendary Star Glove & Leather in excellent condition.

Star Glove began making leather products in 1927 in Ventura California, and their jackets were soon prized by motorcyclists for their durability and style. The company was contracted by the LAPD to produce their highway patrol jackets but also found favour with civilian riders, including, famously, James Dean. Around 1948 Star Glove became the better-known Cal-Leather, so this piece predates that transition.

Star Gloves are scarce and sought after under any circumstances and I've never seen one in this configuration, let alone this well preserved — it looks as if it's had very little wear whatsoever. A real collector's piece and I doubt another like it will appear on the market.

The horsehide is thick and heavy, probably the thickest I've ever handled, but still supple and soft with amazing grain. The mouton lining is a beautiful dark russet and amazingly well preserved too, some of the nicest I've seen of any age. The sleeves are lined in black, I believe satin, and there's more mouton on the inner cuffs to block the wind. The heavy duty Talon "paperclip" zipper is in good working order, as are the other zippers and snaps. The pockets are lined with thick, heavy duty canvas. The quality of craftsmanship and materials is far beyond contemporary jackets from Sears, Buco, Harley Davidson and the like.

Also comes with the removable mouton face flap which looks completely unworn.

Measurements are pictured. This was a custom model but the sizing corresponds roughly with a larger medium/40-42 depending on desired fit, as the mouton lining makes it snugger than the measurements suggest.

I've done my best to document flaws such as there are. All are cosmetic. A scratch on the front panel by the left pocket, very minor surface wear on the right shoulder, a missing chain pull on the right pocket zipper (the zipper still functions perfectly), and slight wear to the right front of the mouton collar.
