Puma
Although the two massively successful sportswear brands are completely independent of one another, it is impossible to tell the full story of adidas or Puma without mention of the other. In 1924, Adolf, also known as “Adi”, and Rudolf Dassler established the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory in Herzogenaurach, Germany. The company enjoyed a successful first 15 years until the beginning of World War II in 1939. During the war, a rift formed between the Dassler brothers when Rudolf thought Adi had reported him to the Allied Forces as a member of the Waffen SS. Their relationship was never the same. In 1947, the brothers officially split apart, as Rudolf started a new company RuDa (which later became Puma) and Adi started adidas. Over the next few decades, Puma enjoyed significant success with its soccer cleats and racing spikes but made the transition into basketball in a major way. In 1973, the Puma Clyde, a shoe designed for NBA superstar Walt “Clyde” Frazier, was released and became an immediate hit. From then on, Puma released a variety of low-top sneakers like the Puma Suede that were successes. In recent years, Puma has collaborated with Alexander McQueen, BAPE and Rhude.
