Levi's

Levi Strauss started what would become Levi Strauss & Co. in the mid-1850s. Originally a wholesale dry goods store, Strauss sold imported clothing, umbrellas and handkerchiefs, the shop moved to various locations in San Francisco throughout the 1800s. In 1872, one of Strauss’s customers named Jacob Davis came to him with a business proposal. Davis was producing white canvas waist overalls (now known as work pants) that featured copper rivets for miners and hard laborers. Davis wanted to patent his creation but didn’t have the money to do so or to upscale production. After receiving this proposition from Davis, Strauss agreed to go into business with him and the two placed the patent, effectively creating the precursor to modern-day jeans. By the 1880s, Davis and Strauss had their own factory and were producing the XX waist overalls. In 1890, the pants formally known as XX waist overalls were given the lot number 501. These 501 jeans remain Levi’s most popular cut. Over the course of the next century and a half, Levi’s would come to be known as the biggest denim brand in the world and one of the most popular brands in all of clothing. In its time, the brand has produced denim jackets, denim shirts and jeans in every cut and color imaginable. Like many other historically significant brands, Levi’s has done collaborations with various brands and designers such as Supreme, Junya Watanabe and Jordan Brand.
