Parisian designer Jeanne Lanvin opened her first store, a hat shop, in 1889. Four years later, she established her eponymous fashion line. Lanvin’s clothing was immediately popular among her fellow Parisians. In 1897, Jeanne Lanvin gave birth to her daughter Marguerite, who became both her muse and model. After Lanvin’s friends noticed how exquisitely her daughter was dressed, they began to ask for similar styles. To fulfill these orders, Lanvin opened a children’s section in her store in 1908. In 1909, this expanded into a young ladies and womens department, designed so that mothers and daughters could shop together. Lanvin became the first Parisian designer to launch a made-to-measure line for men in 1926. While Lanvin herself passed away in 1946, her brand lives on. Today, Lanvin menswear is best known for its ties and sneakers as well as its collaboration with H&M.
