In 1837, Thierry Hermès established a harness and saddlery workshop, but it wasn’t until 1880 that he’d move it to what is now the Hermès flagship location in Paris, France. In the early 1900s, the company (known at the time as Hermes Freres) branched out into leather bags, luggage and other accessories. The Birkin Bag—named after Jane Birkin—is Hermès most well-known and highly-desired item, serving as a status symbol as much as a high quality luxury handbag. When Hermès celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1937, it introduced what many would now consider the brand’s most popular product: the scarf. The Hermès scarf has since become a symbol of affluence, often worn around the heads of women in an effort to keep their hair down in windy weather. Regardless of the item—bag, scarf or otherwise—Hermès has stood firm as a testament to quality luxury for close to 200 years.
