Founded in 1898, in Germany, Rimowa has become the purveyor of suitcases for the world’s most avid travellers. The use of aluminum dates back to a factory fire in 1930 that burned everything except for the metal, leaving Rimowa with no other alternatives. In 1937, the brand introduced its first ribbed “duraluminum” cases and in the intervening 80 years, they have become ubiquitous in airports around the world.

Long known for that grooved aluminum hard shell—now the brand’s trademark—and 360-degree wheels, Rimowa has pivoted slightly since being acquired by luxury behemoth LVMH in 2016. Under the stewardship of Alexandre Arnault, Rimowa has revamped its image, enlisting Kim Jones and LeBron James as brand ambassadors and collaborating with brands like Supreme, Off-White and, most recently, Dior Homme, as well as with artists like Alex Israel and Daniel Arsham.

Founded in 1854, Louis Vuitton is, at its roots, a luggage company and has always strived to create luxury goods for a new class of globetrotting elites. At first, the label focused on producing hard-top trunks but as methods of transportation evolved, so too did luggage. The Keepall, one of the most iconic bags in the Louis Vuitton catalog, was first introduced in 1930, as a soft-shell leather weekender and cabin bag.

The Keepall is likely most famous when dressed in Louis Vuitton’s classic monogram or Damier Ebene, but it has also been the canvas for some of the label’s most creative outputs over the years. Most recently, Virgil Abloh has used the Keepall to debut the eye-catching Prism Monogram and a transparent PVC finish, while Supreme, Stephen Sprouse, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami have all lent their distinct styles to the travel icon over the years.

If the Keepall is the epitome of luxury travel, then WANT Les Essentiels' Organic Cotton Weekender is the must-have carry-all for those with a taste for minimalism.

WANT Les Essentiels was founded in Montreal in 2007 by Byron and Dexter Peart, with the belief that good, timeless luxury products could be sustainable. While the brothers Peart are no longer with the company, WANT’s ethos has remained the same—and one of the most popular silhouettes from their time remains, as well.

The Hartsfield is the ideal carry-on for business travel, with a removable shoulder strap and room for both a change or two of clothes and a laptop. Crafted from a variety of materials—including organic cotton, with a leather bottom and detailing, the Hartsfield is simple but luxurious—in very different fashion than Louis Vuitton’s Keepall.

Perhaps Off-White’s collaboration with Rimowa gave the brand ideas about just how viable branded luggage was. Given the highly-publicized success that was the transparent collaboration with Rimowa, it only makes sense that Off-White would use its own luxury roots to tap into the luggage market on its own terms.

Only introduced in July of 2019, the Arrows Suitcase is a supremely simple piece of luggage, featuring a debossed Off-White logo and “FOR TRAVEL” word mark on either side of the suitcase. Checking in at over a thousand dollars for a carry-on, the Arrows is definitely not the most affordable option on this list.

That said, the durable polycarbonate hard-shell is part of a long line of more traditional suitcases and not dissimilar to what’s been produced by bona fide luggage brands like Samsonite, Swiss Gear or Tumi. If you’re interested in flexing your love of streetwear with Off-White’s brand of modern luxury, this could very well be the luggage to roll with.

The legacy of Polo Sport is well-known by now, but, as a quick primer, the diffusion line was launched in 1992 and marked the arrival of sportswear within fashion. While the diffusion line is best remembered for its windbreakers, stadium jackets and fleece, the navy blue, white and red gym bags are now part of the brand’s lore—confirmed when Ralph Lauren reissued it earlier in 2019 as part of a celebration of the Polo Sport legacy.
