In today’s current sports climate, the relentless debate about who is the one, true G.O.A.T. rages on like never before. It’s completely subjective and wholly unprovable, yet it’s an unavoidable part of modern day fandom.

Every time Tom Brady reaches a Super Bowl we wonder if we’re watching the greatest quarterback of all time. Every time LeBron James puts on an other-worldly performance in the playoffs, the inevitable LeBron vs. Jordan debates creep back to the top of the marquee. In today’s world of hot takes and knee jerk reactions, the G.O.A.T. debate is inevitable.

The world of sneaker design doesn’t see this debate nearly as often, but one designer who would certainly be in the G.O.A.T. conversation (or at least on the Mount Rushmore of sneaker designers) would be Nike legend Tinker Hatfield.

Who is Tinker Hatfield?

An Oregon native, Hatfield studied architecture at the University of Oregon. He also ran track for Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman. He joined Nike in 1981 and in 1985 began working on sneaker design. Over the next 35 years, Hatfield would create some of the most iconic sneakers not just at Nike, but in the history of shoes. His Air Jordan designs took the line to unforeseen heights and created the entire cross-training category, while testing the barriers of sneaker technology. His designs have become ingrained in pop culture over the last four decades. He’s arguably the most accomplished and recognizable sneaker designer of all time and a worthy candidate for the G.O.A.T. moniker.

From the groundbreaking Air Max 1 to the futuristic Nike MAG, Hatfield has a resume like none other. Here’s a look at his 10 greatest sneakers. Feel free to leave your thoughts and favorite Tinker designs in the comments.
