Hedi Slimane’s tenure at Saint Laurent Paris was one of the most controversial appointments at a fashion house in decades. Critically panned yet wildly commercially successful, Slimane’s overhaul of a label once celebrated for its elegance and innate “Frenchness” to a glam/psych rock sales behemoth set a new precedent for modern luxury. Today, every new creative director is expected to match Silmane’s ludicrous sales and create an army of obsessed acolytes. Unfortunately for them, there is only one "Hedi." Ever since the designer returned to fashion, his hyper-focused aesthetic has been widely replicated, setting off a series of imitators and inspiring a new generation of designers. With his unexpected appointment at Celine, the Slimane look is once again back in stores, but less widely available and at an even more prohibitive price point. Thankfully, there are numerous options for those who love the skinny rocker vibe but are not interested in spending $8000 on a Celine leather—or, worse, purchase successor Anthony Vacarello’s pale imitation. For those who are in the market for alternatives, the following brands all are indebted to Slimane in way or another, providing novel ways to express your inner rock god.
