Founded by Teddy Santis in 2014, this brand is better defined as a label on the fringes of streetwear than an out-and-out streetwear label. With its luxury-level approach to details (see things like Satin team jackets, suede-topped crepe sole sneakers or various items in top-class French terry) blended with homages to Michael Jordan and Nas, the brand is better thought of a luxury label with streetwear roots. Given that the brand’s metaphorical north star is Santis’ own upbringing in Queens, it makes sense that each collection manages to walk the line between Manhattan’s upscale metropolitan vibes, and the street-level grit that’s made the city a haven for go-getters.

Rising to prominence creating boards shaped like Rihanna, Ryan Gosling and Marisa Tomei, you know that Alltimers is a brand that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Most easily identified by the signature martini glass logo adorning a plethora of different gear, its collaborations with brands like Dime and adidas also prove that this NYC brand—founded by Rob Harris and Pryce Holmes—isn’t afraid to take its party-loving vibe outside of the five boroughs.

Created and run by former Supreme stalwart Angelo Baque, the once-Japan exclusive label has brought its subtly branded gear online and into the hands of fans stateside, exposing its simple signature logo to a brand new audience. As noted on its (often closed) website: “Launched in 2012, Awake NY captures the unique cultural spirit and sensibility of New York City. Awake NY is a reflection of the diversity that has defined the city's cultural landscape. Simultaneously classic and contemporary, Awake NY evokes both the changing aesthetic vibrancy and timelessness of New York.” With its understated offering—the most recent consisting of logo tees and hoodies in a myriad of colors—we really couldn’t describe the brand any better ourselves.

Both of these labels—founded by skater Alex Olson—mange to hit both sides of the current streetwear space. Bianca Chandôn manages to create cut-and-sew that sits alongside branded pieces. It’s luxury streetwear wrapped in a package that feels simultaneously old-school and contemporary in homages to Larry Levan’s sets at Paradise Garage and Tom Bianchi’s portraits of Fire Island’s Gay community sitting on the shelves next to the plethora of brands holding court at Dover Street Market’s T-Shirt Space. Outside of his more upscale offerings with Bianca Chandôn, Olson’s Call Me 917 is a more overt play to Olson’s skateboarding roots, focusing on logo flips and branded graphic tees in the vein of the gear you’d find at your local skate shop.

You’ve probably known about Bronze 56K thanks in part to its collaborations with brands like Palace and HUF, but the brand has been creating plenty of fine gear all on its own. Evolving from an inside joke between Peter Sidlauskas and Pat Murray, the brand is best known for its early-internet, Windows 95-era graphics. At a time when things are growing ever-more high-definition, the duo’s dry, retro imagery feels both refreshing and strangely modern. More recently, the addition of pullover anoraks, track pants and a coaches jacket remind us that the brand is moving beyond simply offering skate hardware, caps and graphic tees.

Jason Dill—part Supreme skater, part model—helms Fucking Awesome alongside photographer Mike Piscitelli. With a skate team of Supreme adjacent riders (the brand is also generally available in Supreme’s Lafayette Street location), the brand utilizes vulgarity and a crass sense of humor to create gear that reflects not just Dill’s vision, but the grit that embodies NYC street skating. With aggressive advertising—for example, Dill used a rejection letter from Etines (he wanted to put semen over a possible sneaker project) as the ad for the shoe itself—Fucking Awesome is not one to be simply passed by.

It’s not unreasonable to compare to Kith to Supreme; both feel larger-than-life in the modern streetwear retail space, with expansive stores, big product offerings and plenty of celebrity cosigns. But where Supreme has attempted to keep things small (and grown larger thanks to its sense of hyper-exclusivity and perpetual downtown cool), Kith has tapped into the modern excitement around streetwear to grow bigger, stronger and frankly, create an entire lifestyle label (shout out Kith Treats).

Born of the back of Ronnie Fieg’s innate understanding of the modern sneaker market—encompassing design, collaborations and retail—the brand has exploded into a full-on empire, working with everyone from Cap’n Crunch to LeBron James as it becomes a symbol of the modern sneakerhead’s intersectional pool of influences and interests. While Supreme has stayed in its (albeit large) lane of streetwear, tongue-in-cheek accessories, off-kilter collaborations and light cut-and-sew, Kith has evolved in a way that feels Ralph Lauren-esque (Aspen outposts certainly further this vision). Even if streetwear falls out of fashion, expect Kith to remain long after the wave crests and crashes.

“Cherry” star Sean Pablo may be from LA, but his streetwear brand manages to intersect with clear influences from the Big Apple. A combination of Old English typefaces, adult sex shop references and Canal Street-esque bootlegs, Paradis3 channels a dark sense of humor onto a selection of tees and hoodies. Considering that Pablo helped build his name under the guidance of Dill and the Fucking Awesome crew, Paradis3’s overall vibe shouldn’t come as a major surprise.

From the mind of Eric Elms, Powers serves as a passion project-turned-streetwear brand, notable for its use of Elms’ iteration the classic Kilroy character paired with a variety of graphics—including collaborators logos. POWERS may be relatively young, but Elms’ presence in the NYC streetwear scene is anything but brand new. Working with KAWS back during his art school days at Pratt, Elms’ time designing with Supreme (among other things) helped keep him at forefront the “golden era of streetwear.” Now, collaborating with properties like Highsnobiety and brands like Brain Dead, the graffitti-like graphics Elms has been generating and remixing in his Brooklyn studio have found a much larger, global audience.

Founded by Micah Belamarich in 2006, when it comes to taking inspiration from the city it calls home, very few are as committed to the pursuit as Only NY. Aside from tapping artists, musicians and the aesthetics of the city to inform its product offering, Only NY’s most notable projects include collaborations with the city’s Parks Department, Department of Sanitation and the MTA (the organization that manages transit in the New York metropolitan area, aka: the Subway). For something that might not be Supreme affiliated, but has plenty of interesting, understated, NYC-themed gear, you can’t go wrong with Only NY.

Best described as “Skate Dad-wear,” Noah NYC is designed from the mind of former Supreme designer Brendon Babenzien. Far from just hoodies and tees (though there’s plenty of those), the brand excels at creating cozy, thoughtful cut-and-sew collections that embody a mix of New England prep, modern tailoring and, yes, skatewear to create blend that feels like an evolution of Supreme—not a copycat. Sure, Noah’s garments tend to trend at a higher price point than what a Supreme shopper might be used to, but with the brand’s transparency—not to mention Noah NYC’s vocal championing of causes dedicated to environmental responsibility, social justice and fair fashion practices—it’s very easy to justify putting down a little bit more cash for its (well-made) garments.
