Artisanal Snake Denim

With American culture ceaselessly permeating its way into Japan’s mainstream, it’s no surprise that many of Japan’s favorite clothing labels are defined, in part, by their American influences. One of the more literal examples of Japanese-designed American-reinterpretations can be seen in Nobuhiko Kitamura’s Hysteric Glamour. The cult label is inspired by Kitamura’s childhood and his American influences—1960s and 1970s American pop culture and art. Utilizing a slew of bold, bright and vivid motifs, Kitamura’s work is inspired by everything from punk rock to “Playboy”. While Hysteric Glamour has largely been overshadowed by brands like Undercover over the years, a Supreme collaboration from 2017 helped thrust it back into the mainstream conversation.
This pair of Artisanal Snake Denim hails from the earlier days of Hysteric Glamour, when the label began global expansion in 1991 and opened its first storefront in the United Kingdom. Serving as a spiritual successor to World’s End—Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s retail shrine to youth culture and punk rock—Hysteric Glamour experienced its height of popularity after solidifying their presence in the London’s bohemian punk community. These jeans feature a repeating snake motif, embellished studs on the right pocket, intentional misprinting and distressing throughout.
