Description

Takahiro Miyashita's Number (N)ine Autumn/Winter 2001 collection entitled "Standards" runway show took place at Tokyo’s, Russian-owned, “Volga” restaurant in Japan. The atmosphere was notably melancholic and shrouded in a dark, dimly lit, room with models slowly walking down the catwalk with a clear expression of sadness and despair. The collection was once described by former N(N) public relations and future “Pledge” (grunge-themed fashion label) founder, Hidenori Muira, as “young, visibly tired, ex-Yakuza, members heading back home after playing cards all night long”. Standards was formerly named “Love & Anxiety”, but Miyashita wanted to create “the new standard” of clothing at the time and, hence, the collection was renamed. The themes were vague and highly obscure with loosely related elements. This collection focused on the construction, style, cut, fabric and aesthetic of the clothes themselves. As such, the garments were made from imported European fabrics from the likes of “i velluti Pontoglio”/”Loro Piana”/”Angelico” from Italy, “Artextil” from Spain, “Niedieck” from Germany, and “Brisbane” from the UK among many more… Some elements taken from the “grunge” aesthetic were also incorporated as well as seen in the “cigarette holes” tees now featuring a series of emblem graphic designs, chunky “Argyle” pattern knits and straight cut, repaired and distressed, patched up “Grunge Jeans”. Styled in heavy use of layering, Standards set the benchmark for luxury and streetwear that defined the year 2001 for fashion. Widely regarded and continually praised by Japanese and new fashion enthusiasts as a contender for Number (N)ine’s best collection.

1000 people lined up for these at launch. Very hyped garment. Soft cotton denim with distressing throughout
