Sneaker Stories: Week of August 2, 2020

Last week the sneaker community was buzzing when the first images of the new Union x Air Jordan IV surfaced online. But surprisingly, the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2018’s insanely popular Jordan I collaboration was met with its fair share of criticism. People even went so far as to declare the images fake; there was no way this is what they came up with.
Then noted sneakerhead DJ Clark Kent posted his pair, thus making it official. Soon after Clark Kent’s post, official images began to pour in, followed by new leaked images of a rumored Union-exclusive colorway You could sense the tide of public opinion begin to turn. While some opinions changed with the new hi-res imagery, there remains a mixed reaction from large swaths of sneakerheads who have been clamoring for this next release from the LA-based retailer and Jordan Brand, and that’s a good thing. Maybe instead of hype being the sole determining factor of a sneaker’s success, the Union IVs could create a much-needed discourse within the sneaker community.
Other than the imagery, we know nothing about these shoes at the moment, but if we learned anything from the first Union x Jordan collaboration, it’s that there will be an emphasis on craftsmanship–from the box, to the shoe, to the overall rollout.
Despite the apprehension, these will undoubtedly be one of the most popular releases of 2020. Maybe by sneakerheads slamming them online, some will ultimately pass on them, deeming the shoe simply not worth the hassle, thus leaving opportunities for those who actually like the shoe and want to wear it, not just flip it. Stay tuned as they are rumored to drop in the coming weeks.
