Perhaps the most enduring legacy of the Kobe “System” sneakers are the hilarious commercials for the Kobe VII in which Kobe, in a perfectly deadpan tone, inspires celebrities like Aziz Ansari and Kanye West to strive for “more.” The “System” moniker carried over into the Kobe VIII and while the commercials ceased, the quality footwear kept coming, including this “Easter” colorway from 2013. After releasing the sought after “Easter” Air Force 1 back in 2005 to rave reviews, Nike doubled down on the holiday-themed vision the following year for this “Easter Egg” version of the inimitable Air Force 1. Originally released in the early-2000s, these Los Angeles Lakers-inspired Air Force 1s received the limited retro treatment back in 2016 as a ComplexCon exclusive. They are a part of a three-sneaker City Pack, which also includes exclusive Air Force 1s inspired by Chicago and New York. The first wave of these released at ComplexCon in November, however they would eventually trickle into other Los Angeles retailers by December. Daniel Shimizu was a Nike SB team rider during the nascent days of the brand, and he helped craft this SB Dunk back in 2004, which bears his name. Inspired by the Japanese anime Macross, this particular Dunk High sports a white upper with black and grey overlays and a splash of yellow around the collar. On the tongue, instead of the traditional Nike SB tongue tag, you’ll find a skull and crossbones design.

Jordan Brand is always finding creative ways to reinvent the Jordan I for new generations of sneakerheads. Sometimes it’s something crazy like the series of “Fearless” Jordan Is from 2019, or injecting patent leather or other unlikely fabrics. Other times, it will be the most subtle tweak, like this “Bred Toe” iteration from 2018. This version combines elements of both the “Bred” and “Black Toe” OG colorways for a new version. The brand isn’t afraid to mix and match, as evidenced by the release of the new Jordan I Mid “Chicago Toe,” which sports a black toe box instead of the traditional white.

Speaking of combining elements of different Jordan I colorways, the “Top 3” version from 2016 is the shoe that really put this trend into motion. This sneaker combines elements of, arguably, the three most popular Jordan I models in existence (“Bred”/”Chicago”/”Royal”) and combines them into one Frankenstein’s monster of a shoe. While the shoe’s construction remains true to the original fit, the “Top 3” is a mismatched design, with a “Royal” heel and collar, a “Chicago” upper and tongue, with a “Bred”-inspired toe box on one shoe, then is completely flipped on the other. The “Top 3” nickname also alludes to the fact that Michael Jordan was drafted with the third overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft.

In another underrated collaboration between mall favorite J.Crew and New Balance, comes this “Butterscotch” colorway of the New Balance 997 model from 2016. The “Butterscotch” nickname is appropriate, given the rich tones of suede and leather construction throughout the upper, giving off a more luxurious vibe than typical J. Crew release. Part of J.Crew’s “In Good Company” collaboration series, this listing includes the rare wooden box, which only certain locations were able to procure. The box originally came filled with candy, if the sneaker’s inspiration wasn’t obvious enough.

Originally exclusive to Europe, these New Balance 1500s are a product of a collaboration between New Balance and Australian-based streetwear store, Provider. Made in England, these are some of the rarer New Balances you’ll come across. Decked in a bright blue suede along the toe, along with dark grey and black suede throughout the upper, this rare 1500 is topped off with white accents and laces. Provider wanted to keep it simple with the colorway, and focused on using the best materials the English factory had at its disposal. “There are so many things you can do these days with this kind of product,” said owner Chris Worsley. “I just wanted to keep the idea simple.”

Chinese streetwear label Randomevent brought this fresh take on the New Balance 580 silhouette to life back in 2019. Decked in a fuzzy yellow suede upper, that particular fabric is offset by cracked leather along the tongue, collar and heel for a broken-in look. The unique shoe also features a marbled midsole, which sits atop a full-length rubber outsole. Randomevent went off the grid for its first New Balance collaboration and it seems to have paid off.

Two Japanese heavyweights, Asics and BAPE, linked up in 2015 for a couple of collaborations. First was a Gel Lyte 5 in a “Black Camo” colorway, then there was the Gel Kayano Trainer in a “Brown Camo” colorway, which is featured in this listing. Sporting BAPE’s signature camo print throughout the upper, the sneaker is offset by brown suede paneling. The pink outsole truly stands out amongst all the camo and earth tones, while a small BAPE logo is stitched along the heel. On the camouflage insole, you’ll find subtle dual branding. It’s just the right amount of over-the-top BAPE flavor on a trusted trainer.
