The NBA All-Star Game and its accompanying weekend of festivities is far more than just a welcome break in the middle of a physically taxing season. It is also the most important time of the year for sneakers, both on and off the court.

This year’s game will take place on Sunday, February 16th in Chicago, and you can expect a lot of sneaker news, releases and surprises during the weekend extravaganza. On the court, you’ll see some of the rarest and wildest sneakers ever, between the Slam Dunk Contest and the All-Star Game itself. Most players break out either new kicks or rare variations of their signatures, as the typical modus operandi among players in recent years has been “the louder the better” when it comes to their All-Star shoes.

Through the years, there has been no shortage of dope sneaker moments. Michael Jordan broke out everything from “Bordeaux” VIIs to “Columbia” XIs during the annual event. Kobe Bryant sported “True Blue” Jordan IIIs during Jordan’s final All-Star appearance in 2003, and debuted his signature red Kobe VIs when he took home an All-Star Game MVP in 2011.

Off the court, prepare for an onslaught of releases, most notably from Jordan Brand and Nike. If you happen to be in Chicago during the weekend, be on alert, as there tends to be some surprises within the host city, especially when the host city is the former home of Jordan himself.

Never forget: No online retailer has the same breadth and depth of selection as Grailed. From “Purple Pigeons” to a Cam’ron/Allen Iverson collaboration (and everything in between)–in no particular order, these are our picks for the Rarest Sneakers on Grailed This Week.
