When 1017 ALYX 9SM founder Matthew Williams presented his debut runway collection in Paris last June, his partnership with Nike, MMW Training Series 001, was already announced and hotly anticipated. Those that paid close attention, however, noticed a curious sneaker on the designer's feet: a Nike trainer with a fully detachable Vibram outsole. While only a prototype, the shoe instantly sparked rumors that a MMW x Nike sneaker was in the works. Yet, when MMW x Nike Training Series 002 released, there was no sneaker in sight. Then a few weeks ago, following various leaks Williams took to his Instagram to unveil two new silhouettes, somewhat different than the prototype the designer wore nearly a year prior. Now that the shoe is officially receiving a wide release, we’re breaking down Williams’ history with Nike and why the designer receiving his own signature sneaker is more than deserved.
