Keeping warm in his Hedi-era shearling bomber, Ansari’s character Dev tackles the taboo of unplanned pregnancy in the show’s first scene. This bold move lays the foundation for the show: a daring, clever encapsulation of a single dude living in New York City. Throughout the rest of the first season, Dev navigates the chaotic worlds of adulthood, relationships and work.

Dev, decked out in a Band of Outsiders 3-button blazer, roams the Manhattan streets with his friend Bryan (played by Kelvin Yu) in the show’s second episode. Both Dev and Bryan are children of immigrants and this episode is told in part from the perspective of their parents. This twist gives a unique glimpse into the lives of immigrants living in the Unites States and strongly touches on the concept of assimilation.

Even though he is mainly a struggling commercial actor, Dev is somehow able to afford a Saint Laurent L01, which he proudly displays in this fast-paced moment of the show. “Hot Ticket” chronicles Dev’s adventures in the world of dating and provides an insightful look into the modern New York dating scene. This episode resembles a shift in Dev’s mindset because he makes the difficult decision to pursue a longer-term relationship and move onto the next phase of his life.

After suffering through a self-proclaimed “minor racial trauma,” Dev scores front row tickets to a Knicks game, where he sports an Aspesi button-down and Common Projects Achilles lows. In this episode, Dev highlights the subtle discrimination throughout the film industry, focusing on the use of non-Indian actors in Indian roles (see: Short Circuit 2, Ashton Kutcher’s infamous Pop Chips ad), as well as the typecasting that many Indians encounter.

In a moment of self-reflection, Dev uses an excerpt of Sylvia Plath’s poetry to describe his current state-of-mind. Dressed in a Band of Outsiders striped shirt, he finds himself at a crucial point in his life as he decides whether or not to move forward with his long-term relationship. This episode hints at larger themes of adulthood, especially the stark realization that one’s life may branch out in many directions, but only one specific path can be followed.
