In Medias Res is a column in which photographer Chris Fenimore links up with some of fashion's most interesting people to see what they're wearing throughout the week.

How old are you and where do you currently work?

My name is Phoenix Johnson. I am currently 22 years old. I'm a freelance photographer and stylist working from Nashville and New York.

Where did you grow up (how did that impact you, if it impacted you)? Where do you currently live (which neighborhood)?

I grew up in Kingston Springs, Tennessee. A small town right outside of Nashville. It’s a very small town with not much to do. Early on it made me realize I needed to be somewhere bigger, with lots of big trucks and stuff like that. I currently live in Downtown Nashville.

Do you have a favorite place to source for shoots? How about a favorite store?

Most of my sourcing for projects is done online as there isn't much shopping in Nashville. Recently, a store called ROOTED opened up in the city. Its Nashville's first streetwear and designer hybrid store. They are killing it.

How did you get into fashion?

I got into fashion through skateboarding in high school. I always loved how skaters dressed. They were stylish but also didn't give a fuck. You can always tell when people that spend too much time in the mirror before leaving the house.

Is there a lot of styling work in Nashville? How'd you get into styling?

There is a lot of work here, but not a lot of work I would want to be doing. I have been lucky to only work with artists that I personally believe in, as well as their message. I started a t-shirt brand in high school and sold shirts to kids in school. I liked graphic design but always ended up enjoying the styling and creative direction aspects more than actually working on the shirts. It started from there and just grew into a serious thing.

You do some styling work for Paramore, can you tell me about how that transpired?

They’re good friends of mine now. I was working with their former drummer, Zac Farro, on his solo project Halfnoise. When he rejoined the band, he brought me along. I started off just doing their styling for photo and video shoots, and then it morphed into styling, photographing, and graphic design. They are making a real comeback.

What are your current favorite pieces in your closet?

Right now, my favorites are these vintage Bart Simpson tees I have started collecting. I also love my Prada and YSL short sleeve button ups. I have so much designer clothing but never really wear any of it. I always end up running out of the house in the same two or three T-shirts and Target chinos!

Do you have a favorite brand or designer?

It changes kind of frequently, but right now I am really liking what Alyx is doing and I am very excited to see what Hedi Slimane does at Celine. Alyx is killing the game--the womenswear is insane. There clothes are exciting and sexy, but also very wearable. I am really sick of all these designers putting out shit you can't wear.

How long have you been using Grailed?

I have been on Grailed for three or four years. I used to resell shit all the time—wear it once then sell it.

What are you currently listening to?

I am currently listening to Oasis, The Verve, Nirvana, Porches, and Gothbabe. Check out Gothbabe; he's on the come up.
