Should you be wearing a mask? It’s a simple question, but the answers, thus far, have been far from simple.

At first, we were told that outside of people who had contracted COVID-19 or those working in hospitals, wearing a mask was probably unnecessary. Then, we were told that there was a worldwide shortage of now infamous N95 masks. Now, most of us have been told that we should probably be wearing masks whenever we’re in public—which is the right call.

It’s extremely important to note that masks are not a substitute for washing your hands, not touching your face, social distancing and flat-out staying home. In fact, wearing a mask does more for others than it does for yourself.

According to National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anthony Fauci, roughly 25 percent of those infected with COVID-19 could be asymptomatic—though WHO research suggests asymptomatic carriers eventually develop symptoms. So, there’s a good chance that even if you feel fine now, you might be doing society a bigger favor than you think by wearing a mask.

There are a handful of masks from the likes of Off-White or A Bathing Ape available on Grailed, but it’s also fairly easy to make yourself a mask at home and you likely already have everything you need. Plus, it’ll allow you to add a personal touch to your personal protective equipment.

Again—these masks also aren’t substitutes for social distancing, washing your hands and staying home. Nor should these masks be worn when you’re not going to come within a few meters of people. There’s no need to wear them at home, or when driving to the grocery store—in fact, you’ll likely find them to be terribly uncomfortable for extended periods.

With N95 and run-of-the-mill surgical masks in short supply, it’s best to leave them for the medical professionals who need them, which puts us all in a rather tricky situation: How to best cover our faces.
