Of all the social influencers Grailed has been working with lately, DevanOnDeck is easily one of our favorites. The Oakland native's Instagram is just the kind of mix between art and fashion that we love, not to mention his personal style—self-described as “contemporary street-lux”—hits all the right notes. As one of the first employees of Snapchat, Devan was responsible for creative content and special coverage around men’s fashion and now, as an independent content creator, Devan is in a position where he has become the authority on mobile short-form video. His energy and innovating is something everyone can get into. We recently caught up with Devan for a quick chat about everything from his influences to his favorite brands and designers.
Tell us a bit about yourself? What are you up to these days?
I'm a Los Angeles-based Art Director turned tastemaker. I have a mixed background rooted in tech, fashion, design, and marketing that has resulted in a bit of attention on social media. Lately, I've been prepping to launch my YouTube and I'm excited to take on the new challenge.
Fashion is great, the followers are cool but I love helping people own their individuality–I love when people take things and make it themselves. So hopefully I can help push the culture forward.
How did you get into fashion?
I started out as a sneakerhead at the age of 13. In high school, I used to skip lunch and save my money to buy the latest Nike SB's. By the time I graduated, I was a full-fledged customizer; I could take a shoe apart and reassemble it in hours. I even got my work into a couple local boutiques in the Bay Area. Then my perspective and talent completely elevated once I studied Menswear Design on a University level.
Who are some of your favorite brands and designers right now and why? Is there anyone under the radar we should check out?
I'm really enjoying what Pharrell Williams has been putting out with the support of the designers at Adidas and G-Star Raw. Both brands are iconic to me and ironically pair together well. Beyond that, I'm mostly into timeless brands like MyClo, Vince and Levi's that make quality basics; essentials for the day-to-day.
What are some of the things you love about Grailed?
The first thing that stood out about Grailed was the pricing; I was surprised to find a lot of hyped pieces that didn't hit my pockets hella hard — Plus a lot of my boys already used the app so it just made sense for me too.
What are some exciting projects you’re working on that we should be on the lookout for?
As far as new projects go, I'm aiming to launch my YouTube with a splash. I've been innovating on Instagram for a while now ya know? I'm not experienced with long-form video at all, so it's an exciting risk to take. But the payoff is that I will connect with like-minded people in a more genuine and transparent way.
