To some, Supreme and A Bathing Ape (better known as BAPE) might seem like competitors—streetwear titans hailing from the United States and Japan, respectively, but enjoying tremendous success in both regions. Rather than compete with one another however, the two brands teamed up on a series of T-shirts in 2002 that saw Supreme’s hallowed box logo covered in BAPE’s iconic camouflage patterns. While there were 15 different makeups of the box logo T-shirt—ranging from tonal red to the woodland-inspired First Camo—it was a one-time collaboration, released at a time when both brands were producing much smaller quantities. As their notoriety grew, and as an increasingly large number of T-shirts inevitably became worn out or were discarded, the resale price skyrocketed and camouflage box logos are near the top of every Supreme collector’s list.

Supreme has a history when it comes to working with luxury menswear brands. One of the first such designers they teamed up with was New York-based Adam Kimmel, who had launched a cult-favourite eponymous menswear line in 2004, drawing rave reviews from the likes of legendary fashion critic Tim Blanks and collaborations with artist George Condo. Supreme and Kimmel produced sleek two-button suits made from Italian cotton and corduroy and workwear-inspired cotton twill jumpsuits. The collaboration came to an untimely end after the Fall/Winter 2012 iteration, as Kimmel stepped away from the fashion world and shuttered his eponymous line. Supreme, for its part, has routinely revisited the two-button, unlined suit over the years—a testament, perhaps, to Kimmel’s influence on Supreme founder James Jebbia, who likened him to the “bridge between Ralph Lauren and Helmut Lang.”

Supreme’s collaborators are often steeped in history, with deep ties to various subcultures, so it came as little surprise that Supreme tapped Clarks, a brand with intricate links to music, for a collaboration for Fall/Winter 2011. What was surprising, was that the two brands produced rather toned-down, leather and nubuck versions of the Mali Boot, one of Clarks’ most traditional silhouettes. As the collaboration continued, silhouettes with deeper ties to streetwear and hip-hop culture followed suit, like the Wallabee, in 2012, and the Desert Boot, for Spring/Summer 2013. Today, the ongoing collaboration with Clarks is a staple of Supreme’s collections, with releases that oscillate between classic—like the Weavers released in Spring/Summer 2018—and ostentatious—like the Spring/Summer 2019 Wallabees covered in paisley print.

When Supreme and Comme des Garçons SHIRT first teamed up in 2012, many were surprised. While the New York imprint had already collaborated with a number of Japanese brands—which we’ll get to—and the likes of Thom Browne and A.P.C., Comme des Garçons was in a different realm. The first release—part of the Spring/Summer 2012 collection—featured polka dots, mirrored box logos and striped shirts. All of which have been mainstays in the ongoing collaboration between the two brands, like the second release, for Spring/Summer 2013, that saw polka dot digicamo used extensively, or a Spring/Summer 2014 collection heavy on stripes. Footwear, too, has played a big role in the Comme des Garçons SHIRT x Supreme history, with the duo working Vans Eras, Half Cabs, Sk8-His and Authentics, and Nike Air Force 1s into various releases. Over the years, the collaborative releases have been among Supreme’s most-sought after and played an undeniable role in elevating the skate brand to fashion-adjacency. Often tapping into both the history of Supreme and the imagery of Comme des Garçons, it’s one of the more interesting (an regular) parts of the wider Comme des Garçons universe (especially with Dover Street Market’s position as the only non-Supreme store to sell Supreme on drop day).

Supreme’s accessories and trinkets have developed a reputation for being as sought-after as the clothes, but are often relegated to apartment decor and rarely used for their intended purpose. Case in point: the skate brand’s recurring collaboration with boxing equipment manufacturer Everlast. The Fall/Winter 2008 collection marked the first time the two brands worked together, with a trio of boxing gloves—black, blue and, of course, red—and miniature glove keychains. It wasn’t the first time that Supreme had referenced Everlast, though; in 1998, the brand had riffed on Everlast’s logo for a series of T-shirts, including a boxing glove graphic. A hand grip followed suit in 2013, then a jump rope in 2014 and a punching bag in 2016. Finally, Fall/Winter 2017 saw Supreme/Everlast satin robes and a training mat released. The gloves from 2008 and the 2016 punching bag remain among the most coveted Supreme accessories of all-time, having made their way into auctions at Sotheby’s, thereby entrenching the unlikely collaboration as one of the most important in Supreme’s history.

Supreme’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection also saw the skate imprint collaborate with Fender on an all-white Stratocaster—save for a red box logo, of course. Also included were a Supreme-branded strap, case and picks. Supreme turned to DJ Quik, who was filmed strumming it and then proclaiming that “there are kids that are gonna pick up this guitar and change the world with it.” It was very much a collector’s item, with guitar publications pointing out that the all-white makeup didn’t lend itself to normal use. While not steeped in as much history as some of Supreme’s other collaborations, the Supreme x Fender Stratocaster immediately became a status piece for Supreme aficionados.

There’s an argument to be made that no collaborative partnership is more foundational to Supreme’s business than its ongoing relationship with [Hanes](https://www.grailed.com/designers/hanes. The collaboration came about because most of the store’s staff were wearing white Polo Ralph Lauren T-shirts in the mid-to-late 2000s. Supreme simply swapped the Polo logo for a small, red box logo near the hem and—voilà—a new staple was born. The range has since expanded to include tank tops, socks, boxers, thermals and the occasional eclectic print. While it’s by no means the most hyped part of Supreme’s seasonal collections, it represents the bedrock of the brand’s offering—always available throughout each and every season and easily the most accessible.

Lacoste is a tennis brand at heart, but it’s impossible to deny that the French brand has been co-opted by streetwear over the years. That duality has been at the heart of the collaboration between Supreme and Lacoste since Spring/Summer 2017, when the pair debuted a range that included a tennis sweater, pique shorts and long sleeve polos, but also a ‘90s-inspired tracksuit. That initial collection was launched a year after Supreme opened their Paris outpost and, to a certain extent, symbolized the brand’s immersion within the French skate and streetwear scene. With each passing season, the pair have rolled out a range of garments that pay homage both to Lacoste’s more posh, tennis-playing roots, but also to the brand’s place within contemporary street culture, with everything from nylon windbreakers and track pants to shearling-lined wool bombers and terrycloth polos.

The power of Levi’s is such that even a brand with a well-regarded denim program, like Supreme, recognizes the influence and importance that Levi’s has. You could even say that Supreme treats the San Francisco denim purveyor with a certain reverence. Fall/Winter 2011 saw Supreme and Levi’s debut an exclusive range of classic Americana—and, crucially, American-made—pieces like the 505 jean, a denim down vest, chambray shirts and trucker jackets in luxe suede and leather. As the collaboration has evolved, the duo have continued to examine traditional Americana and Levi’s classics, while also putting out products that have an undeniable Supreme spin on them, like snakeskin overalls and truckers in Fall/Winter 2017, zebra print for Fall/Winter 2015 and, most recently nylon versions of classic denim garments for Fall/Winter 2019. Arguably the most important part of the collaboration, though, has been Levi’s commitment to making the garments in the United States, something that it does not necessarily do for most of its contemporary product. For as much respect as Supreme shows Levi’s, the denim brand shows just as much back, and the duo represent, to some extent, the pinnacle of American fashion, born in different eras.

If there was a singular moment that signalled Supreme’s ascension to the pinnacle of not only streetwear but menswear—and, really, fashion writ large—it was the Fall/Winter 2017 collaboration with Louis Vuitton. For context, in 2000, Louis Vuitton had hit Supreme with a cease and desist for a print that was undeniably based on the French house’s monogram. But, in 2017, with Kim Jones at the helm of Vuitton, and streetwear an undeniable force in the industry, Supreme was the one being tapped for clout. Supreme gained a tremendous amount by collaborating with Louis Vuitton—it’s the co-sign to end all co-signs, a stamp of approval from the capital-F fashion crowd—but the French brand gained more. This was before LVMH appointed Virgil Abloh to Vuitton, and the house, while successful under Jones, was not necessarily a driver of cool among younger customers. The massive collection—panned almost immediately by critics—was a smashing success, selling out across select pop ups, and garnering innumerable headlines. The clothes, bags and accessories, for their part, fetched princely sums at retail while earning even higher markups in the secondary market. Over the top as they may be, this collaboration’s pieces are a clear milestone of fashion history.

We get it this one isn’t what you were expecting. Hear us out. Over the years, some of Supreme’s decks have come to be seen as decorative art—hung in houses, apartments and sold at auctions the world over. It’s a divisive practice and distinction, though. But the brand also has ties to the establishment art world thanks to a series of collaborations with respected artists and a Spring/Summer 2019 partnership with porcelain maestros Meissen. Throwing a brand logo on a $4,000 porcelain statuette is the type of thing that Supreme—and only Supreme—can get away with. Meissen has an illustrious history in the porcelain world, but the collaboration likely didn’t resonate with traditional collectors, Christie’s Head of Ceramics Carleigh Queenth told *GQ’*s Rachel Tashjian. Instead, it was the type of absurd collaboration that has contributed to Supreme’s mythical aura, one that is out of left field and exposes Supreme’s clientele to an entirely new realm. One is left to wonder whether it was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek reference on the part of Jebbia and company—if consumers are treating decks and bricks like thousand dollar pieces of art, maybe it’s time to offer them thousand dollar pieces of actual art.

Supreme has a long and testy relationship with authority—from the NYPD shutting down lines, to graphics that call out abuse of power. But there have also been moments of levity, like the sweatsuit emblazoned with President Obama’s portrait or a collaboration with New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Supreme’s logo was emblazoned on a limited number of MTA MetroCards to mark the skate brand’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection. The two ride cards were available at select metro stations, including the Broadway-Lafayette stop closest to Supreme’s Manhattan outpost at the time. The cards quickly became one of Supreme’s most sought-after collaborative accessories of all time, with the resale prices climbing into the hundreds of dollars. The Supreme/MTA MetroCard stands out as a decidedly New York collaboration that inspired the type of hysteria that only Supreme could at the height of its popularity.

Oh—don’t mind two of the most influential brands in streetwear collaborating—it happens all the time. When Supreme and Nike first teamed up in 2002, there was little to suggest that Supreme would become the behemoth that it is today. The first collaborative release, a SB Dunk Low that used the iconic elephant print from the Air Jordan III, went on to become of the most sought-after sneakers of all-time and set the stage for a fruitful partnership between the two brands. From the outset, the collaboration has been an almost yearly affair, with a Dunk High SB in 2003, a Delta Force 3/4 SB in ’04 and a luxurious, quilted leather Blazer SB with a faux snakeskin Swoosh in 2006. Until 2007, the collaboration was limited to footwear, with any clothing referencing the releases produced exclusively by Supreme. That year, though, as part of the Fall/Winter 2007 collection, the duo introduced the first range of Supreme/Nike apparel—co-branded wool varsity jackets—alongside Air Trainer 2 SBs. As the collaboration has evolved, Supreme has moved beyond Nike’s traditional SB models, with a trio of Air Force 1s debuting for Fall/Winter 2012 and, then, everything from Foamposites and [Jordan V](https://www.grailed.com/drycleanonly/jordan-5-historys to Air Max 98s and Uptempos. The clothing, too, has included everything from basketball and baseball jerseys to fleece and tracksuits. With nearly two decades of collaborative releases, the Supreme/Nike partnership has proven to be one of the most stable in streetwear—and one of the most influential, too.

Gone, but not forgotten; Brian Donnelly—better known to most as KAWS—shuttered his brand OriginalFake in 2013, but it remains one of the most influential from streetwear’s halcyon days in the mid-2000s. As KAWS, Donnelly had previously collaborated with Supreme, in 2001 and 2002, but the 2008 collaboration saw Supreme and OriginalFake team up to celebrate a pair of Japanese anniversaries. It had been ten years since Supreme opened its first Japanese store and two years for OriginalFake. OriginalFake’s iconic Bendy character was wrapped around Kate Moss to recreate one of Supreme’s most famous photo T-shirts, rendered in yellow at Supreme and in red at OriginalFake. An OriginalFake take on Supreme’s logo followed suit in 2013. Both iterations of the collaboration are highly sought after and represent a coming together of two of New York’s most influential cultural entities.

Supreme loves few things more than experimenting with beloved cultural icons or symbols of contemporary Americana. Bearing that in mind, it makes a lot of sense that the skate brand would collaborate with Hugh Hefner’s Playboy—whose Bunny is among the most iconic logos in contemporary culture. First introduced for Spring/Summer 2011, with Jason Dill modeling, the collaboration has seen Supreme use the Bunny as an all-over print, or create varsity jackets that suggest a belonging to a Supreme x Playboy club, or position it as one would sponsor on the jersey of a fictional soccer club. The duo have released everything from parkas to Vans Authentics. It might not be the most hyped collaboration that Supreme churns out with regularity, but there’s no denying that it represents two cultural titans—albeit from different eras—coming together.

In recent years, Supreme has, it seems, developed a working relationship with LVMH. Since its collaboration with Louis Vuitton released, Supreme has dropped co-branded bags with LVMH luggage manufacturer Rimowa, on two occasions. The first release, as part of the brand’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection, caught many by surprise. It was a polarizing release to say the least, sought out by fervent Supreme collectors, but looked down upon by those who saw people simply clamoring for the massive logo and clout. The prices, predictably, skyrocketed in the secondary market, with the red and black Topas rolling luggage trolleys changing hands for thousands of dollars. A year and a half later, Supreme and Rimowa returned with a slightly toned down collaboration, featuring reworked sizes, a smaller Supreme logo, and painted aluminum bodies with a spiderweb print. The fact that the partnership with Rimowa came about after the Louis Vuitton collaboration—and that it’s lasted more than a season—might be a sign of deepening ties between Supreme and LVMH, with further collaborations on the horizon.

There’s nothing wrong with using a Supreme x Spalding basketball for a game of H-O-R-S-E, but you might be kissing $25,000 goodbye. That would be if you happened to get your hands on one of the rumored 70 red and white Supreme/Spalding basketballs made in 1996. They are bewilderingly hard to find—though one did surface on Grailed—and, to many collectors, represent one of the true Supreme grails. Then, in 2007, the two reunited to remake the same red and white ball, and while less hard to find than an original, the price tag on the resale market is still in the thousands of dollars. Finally, in 2017, a white and black basketball was produced, with the help of Mark Gonzales. If the trend holds, then Supreme and Spalding should be teaming up again in 2027.

There’s something to be said for Supreme’s knack for timing—or is it that a Supreme co-sign is the ultimate co-sign that pushes brands over the top? In the case of [Stone Island](https://www.grailed.com/designers/stone-island, it might have been a bit of both. The Italian outerwear and sportswear manufacturer has a long and illustrious history, having been founded in 1982 by Massimo Osti, but it has never enjoyed a terrible amount of success in the United States. That changed around the same time Supreme and Stone Island debuted their first collaboration, for Fall/Winter 2014. Sure, it may have something to do with the globalization of grime, or the rise of luxury streetwear—but it might have been the Supreme effect. And, regardless, the timing worked out well. That first collection saw Supreme explore the iconic Raso Gomatto, albeit with the addition of C.P. Company’s—another Osti brand—patented goggles. Spring/Summer 2015 saw Supreme delve into Stone Island’s iconic Nylon Metal fabric, while Spring/Summer 2016 saw the experimentation with textiles get even more advanced, with heat-reactive trench coats. Since then, the pace of the collaboration has slowed, with Fall/Winter 2017 and Spring/Summer 2019 drops. Across the five collections, though, the offering has been extremely robust—with T-shirts, fleece, accessories, windbreakers and mid-layers—with perhaps only the Supreme x The North Face collaboration offering a more diverse product selection.

Supreme founder James Jebbia has never been shy about the influence that Shawn Stussy had on him, and without Stussy—and the NYC outpost that Jebbia opened with Stussy in 1991—one wonders if there would even be a Supreme. When Stussy celebrated its 30th anniversary, in 2010, the California brand turned to a number of those for whom it paved the path to success, including Supreme. To mark the occasion, Supreme revisited the archives, riffing on an old “Skate Tough” graphic from the 1980s, with Stussy’s logo on the front chest and Supreme’s red box logo on the lower back. Unlike many of the other collaborations on this list, the T-shirt was never available through Supreme—it was only sold through Stussy Chapter stores. The limited nature of the T-shirt and the stature of both Stussy and Supreme make this collaboration a piece of streetwear history.

There are some things that you can count on. With the exception of 2009, collaborations between Supreme and California-based outerwear brand The North Face have been a regular occurrence since 2007. What began with a pair of Summit Jackets for Fall/Winter 2007 has slowly blossomed into an almost all-encompassing collaboration, with jackets, fleece, T-shirts, bags and accessories available season in-season out. While the ’07 Summit Jackets are highly sought-after by collectors, the Spring/Summer 2008 jackets are among the rarest Supreme pieces ever. Adorned with an illustration of the New York Public Library, in color or greyscale, the printed Summit Jackets now fetch near-five figure prices on the resale market. The notoriety of those jackets, in particular, created a mystique around Supreme in the early-to-mid 2010s, just as follow-up collaborations between Supreme and The North Face began to work their way into the mainstream, thanks to the likes of Drake and A$AP Rocky. It’s been a mutually-beneficial relationship, with The North Face benefitting from Supreme’s contemporary clout and Supreme getting an instantly-recognizable mass-market brand name partner.

The Supreme x MTA MetroCard is hard to outdo in terms of peak New York, but the ongoing collaboration between Supreme and Timberland might just get the edge—at least in terms of cultural relevance. What began in Fall/Winter 2006 with a trio of eclectic, leopard-trimmed Field Boots has seen Supreme put its unique spin on the Euro Hiker, Waterproof Chukka, Classic 6-Inch and 3-Eye Lug boots. The Fall/Winter 2013 iteration—a Classic 6-Inch Boot with a faux snakeskin upper—also saw Comme des Garçons SHIRT brought into the loop, as did the Fall/Winter 2015 drop. But it was the Fall/Winter 2017 offering, which featured a pair of Classic 6-Inch Boots emblazoned with a stars and stripes pattern, and the more recent Spring/Summer 2019 3-Eye Lug Boots—outfitted with pony hair—that have proven to be tremendously popular. In New York, Timberland boots, even the most simple ones, are statement pieces—with connotations of belonging and sociocultural hierarchy. What Supreme has done with Timberland, time and again, is supercharge that, by offering up the most ostentatious statement boots, in a way only Supreme could.

Supreme x Undercover might be a fixture of the New York brand’s collections now, but it wasn’t always that way. Undercover was founded in 1990, and showed its first full collection the same year that Supreme was launched, but it wasn’t until 2006 that the two teamed up. In December of that year, the two brands partnered with Silly Thing and Futura on a commemorative T-shirt, for “Silly Thing: Event Horizon – The Retro Journey of the Spraycan Wizard”, an art show. Then, as part of Supreme’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection, Jun Takahashi and James Jebbia’s labels reunited, releasing a collection that would capture the attention of the streetwear world and centered on the sentence “Anarchy Is Key”. It was a refined collection, with a Schott leather jacket, a trench coat, bondage pants, and a number of staples. Since then, the partnership has been a regular occurrence, with the two brands riffing on everything from Public Enemy to Dutch Renaissance art. It’s a fitting collaboration for both brands, with Supreme’s heavy presence in Japan and Takahashi’s habit of making reference to American pop culture with his designs.

Before launching Supreme, in 1994, James Jebbia had opened the Stussy Chapter store on Prince Street in 1991. But, before that, he, along with his partner, Mary Ann Fusco, had opened Union, in 1989. A multi-brand retailer, Union carried wares from Japan and the U.K., and played a big role in setting trends in New York’s streetwear scene in the 1990s. Come 2011, both Supreme and Union were relatively well-established and Jebbia saw it fit to launch a collaborative T-shirt. The front graphic featured two figures shaking hands above the phrase “Double Trouble”, while the rear saw Union’s jumping man logo above Supreme’s red box logo. Then, in 2006, after Union reopened renovations, the store released a T-shirt thanking the brands that had supported it over the years, with the logos of Supreme, Neighborhood, WTAPS, Stussy, SSUR, aNYthing and J.Money. So, while it was not a second full-on Supreme and Union collaboration, it was another reminder that the two New York brands were inextricably tied together. With Union’s New York outpost having shuttered in 2009—the store is now anchored in Los Angeles and Tokyo—the ’01 T-shirt is something of a relic of a bygone era and a reference to both Supreme and Union’s roots.

The oldest collaborator on this list—if not in the entire Supreme archive—Vans has been working with the New York skate brand since 1996. Vans has an illustrious history of identifying young talent, be they skaters or brands, and tapping them while they’re still on the come-up. The first capsule featured three American-made Old Skools, with red Supreme tags—two made up with different shades of woodland camouflage, and a cream and grey version. It took eight years for the next collaboration to drop, but it featured four silhouettes, and three colorways of each. Since then, it’s been a yearly—and, now, seasonal—affair. With such a deep catalogue, it’s nearly impossible to touch on each and every release, but some have had a more profound impact than others. The Spring/Summer 2012 drop was unique and celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Half Cab, with Steve Caballero cutting the upper off of Full Cabs and duct taping them—as he had done two decades prior—before signing them. They were sold exclusively at Supreme’s Fairfax outpost and remain a true collector’s item. A year later, Supreme and Vans were once again releasing sneakers that would come to dominate collector’s dreams, teaming up with renowned graphic artist Peter Saville to plaster the floral cover art from New Order’s Peace, Corruption & Lies album on three silhouettes. Over the years, Vans has become one of Supreme’s trusted partners for third-party collaborations, using classic skate silhouettes for projects with Comme des Garçons SHIRT, White Castle, Playboy and Bruce Lee. Along with Hanes, Nike and The North Face, Supreme’s partnership with Vans helps form the bedrock of the brand’s offering—and its identity.

One is left to wonder what could have been of Supreme and Visvim’s partnership if it had lasted more than a single collection. Both brands have fervent followings, and exist in decidedly different areas of menswear. It was the perfect collaboration for Supreme—the type that people scratch their head at, but then realize makes sense in a way that only Supreme could pull off. The collection was small—a Tradesman jacket, a camp hat, a beanie and a Serra Ascent boot—but it featured all of Visvim’s hallmarks, from the Gore-Tex to the earthy palette, albeit with a Supreme touch here and there, in the form of small box logos or unique color-blocking. Since that Fall/Winter 2008 drop, a second Supreme x Visvim capsule has been the stuff of rumors, and since Supreme’s collaboration with Louis Vuitton, anything now seems possible for the skate brand.
